What is a domain name?

A domain name is a string of text that is used to identify a specific resource on the internet, such as a website or an email. It is unique and cannot be shared between different sites. Our domain name is jetstream-hosting.com.

When you visit our website, the domain name is converted into an IP Address (e.g. 192.880.20.1) behind the scenes, which is used to communicate with the server to request, receive and display content.

Why do you need one?

Domain names are useful because they remove the need to remember the IP Address of any website you would like to visit.

Think about how many websites you’ve visited in the past week, then imagine if you had to use the IP Address instead of the domain name, every time you wanted to access those websites. You can just imagine what a daunting task it would be to remember and maintain all your favourite websites.

Besides being easy to remember, a domain name makes your company or organisation look more professional and helps you build and solidify your online presence.

What does it look like?

A domain name can be divided into two (sometimes three) parts that are separated by periods.

Top-Level Domains

The Top-Level Domain (TLD) is the two or three letter section to the right of the period. For example, in “jetstream-hosting.com”, “.com” is the TLD.

Common TLD’s include:

  • .com
  • .net
  • .org

The domains listed above are known a Generic TLD’s and can be used worldwide.

There are also location-specific or Geographic domain names such as:

  • .africa
  • .joburg
  • .durban
  • .capetown

Second-Level Domains

The Second-Level Domain (2LD) is the section to the left of the TLD. For example, in “jetstream-hosting.com”, “jetstream-hosting” is the 2LD.

At Jetstream, we offer extremely affordable registration, transfer and renewals of the most popular, as well as exclusive TLD’s on the market. You can purchase or transfer domain names to us through the Client Area, under the Domains Tab.
